OpenAI officially requested that copyrights be restricted
The lawsuits filed against OpenAI by The New York Times and other media organizations in particular have caused great controversy on this issue. The company claimed that access to copyrighted content should be considered within the scope of “fair use” in order to make AI better and more accessible. However, content creators claim that this approach is a copyright violation and harms their commercial interests.
OpenAI’s definition of fair use has also been criticized by legal experts. Traditionally, this concept has been considered valid for certain areas of use, such as news excerpts or academic studies. However, OpenAI stated that this limit should be expanded and applied to AI training.
OpenAI states that broad data access should be provided in order to compete with China-based AI models. The policy proposal stated, “If China’s developers have unlimited access to data and American companies are denied fair use access, the AI race will effectively end.”
